Mary Pitt Hits Us All in the Pit of the Stomach
Franklin's Focus 12/29/06 - I am forwarding a piece sent to me by my Net friend T. It was written by a woman in her 70s, who is as tough as steel. She absolutely refuses to coddle us. Her words feel like stinging slaps in the face.
As you finish this essay, you just might feel as though you've been kicked in the pit of your stomach. If so, all the better. I love a thinker who sees exactly what has happened in America and what is awaiting us all in a country that is sliding so fast into a totalitarian dictatorship, it is breathtaking.
ALAS, THE MARY PITTS OF THIS NATION HAVE BEEN FEW AND FAR BETWEEN.

The only major, in depth, gutsy intellectual figure in this country who has been telling it like it is from day one is Gore Vidal. He has often been described as 'America's leading person of letters'. That he is, and much more. His historical novels, covering American history since independence, arguably constitute one of the most penetrating histories of America ever written. Born on 3 October 1925, he now is an octogenarian, and he is still fighting for you and me.
I wish I could somehow give him and Mary Pitts a long hug. People such as these two are near miracles in the morass of America's anti-rational, militaristic, predatory, Darwinistic culture. Throughout my entire adult life, I've been saying this day would eventually be upon us. I just did not believe I would actually witness it in my lifetime. I guess I did not believe it would happen so easily and so quickly. It was perhaps unthinkable that 535 representatives of the American people would actually stand by like mute statues as a small junta brazenly destroyed our political system and corruptly sank our economy.
We are not alone. I believe there are forces at work in this century that will put an end to constitutional democracy almost everywhere. The 21st century will be a century of totalitarian states. Homes of democracy such as the US, UK, Australia, and India, have already gone a long ways toward creating police states. Sixty-five years ago, Erich Fromm laid out the trajectory that constitutional democracies would likely follow. He saw the human animal as unable to live with the risks and heavy responsibilities woven into a state of freedom. He saw humans living with freedom and predatory capitalism as becoming alienated, dehumanized, robotic.
When the right leaders came along with the right kind of rhetoric and forcefulness, they would easily manipulate these people and lead them down a path into totalitarianism. 20th century civilization was one wherein citizens increasingly became willing to submit to a total state. WW II seemingly stemmed this drift, but the movement away from freedom would reassert itself, largely under the leadership of Empire America.
SADLY, THOSE OF US WHO LOVE FREEDOM, WILL BE DRAGGED ALONG WITH THOSE WHO FLEE FROM ITS GLORY.
